English Speaking Countries' Treasure Hunt


European Day of Languages: 26th September
 

 

Over 6000 languages are nowadays spoken in the world. But behind those languages there is a culture, a lifestyle, a history. The European Day of Languages (EDL) aims to celebrate that by showing people across Europe how important languages are, and what fun we can get through language learning.
It is celebrated on 26th September and we want to join that celebration. It was set up by the Council of Europe and was first celebrated in 2001 , now 45 countries are involved in it .
It’s just about finding a way to get you excited about language!
Now, focus on English, one of the most widespread languages in the world! Answer the following questions:

1. In how many different languages can you say "Hello!"?
1. How many English Speaking Countries can you think of?
2. Is English spoken as their first language?
3. What historical relationship with England do they have?
4. Which are their differences in accent, vocabulary or grammar from British English?
5. What is the Commonwealth?

THE BIG QUESTION: Can you imagine a world where just one language was spoken? Would it be better or worse? Explain
