~WHERE READING BEES ARE HAPPY BEES~

The library program for first grade and second grade students at Elk Ridge is modeled on the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner adopted by the American Association of School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association. These standards support and correlate with the Pennsylvania standards for reading, writing, speaking and listening as well as standards for other content areas.
Students visit the library every 4 days.Library periods are 40 minutes in duration.
Students in both grades exchange books whenever they come to the library. Although no fines are assessed for the late return of library books, responsibility for returning them on time is continually stressed. Students who wish to renew their library book may do so by returning the book and requesting a renewal. Unless the book has been requested by another student, the renewal is granted.

OUR CATALOG IS NOW SEARCHABLE AT HOME.

***READING ALOUD***
Children often select a book because of the subject, the artwork or the recommendation of a peer without thinking about their ability to read it on their own. This is an opportunity for you to read the book aloud to your child. The advantages of doing so even when your child is reading independently are tremendous. Aside from strengthening the parent-child bond that develops from shared experiences, children who listen to stories have increased vocabulary, comprehension, background knowledge and motivation which are critical components of all literacy activities.
To find recommended books for your child to read independently or for you to read together, visit Reading Rockets, a website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The site provides a compilation of all noteworthy organizations that recommend literature for young people as well as booklists by theme.
The U.S. Department of Education also sponsors the website Colorin colorado which includes information for English language learners. The content is available in both English and Spanish.
