Onomatopoeia is the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, the word onomatopoeia originates from the Greek word onomatopoiia meaning 'word-making'.
Onomatopoeia can be used as a linguistic device in many types of writings including jokes. For example, what about the joke:
Knock-knock Who's there?
Boo
Boo who?
Don't cry, I was only joking
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
