2012 Project

Go Green Save Green

Scientific American 2009

Introduction
The Go Green & Save Green contest promotes recycling and saving money at the same time. Elementary schools throughout the Commonwealth are invited to return bottles and cans for the deposit and then deposit that money in a school wide savings account. Each school will choose a local charity to donate their savings to. In three months’ time the school that has saved the most money will be invited to the State House for the National Financial Capability Recognition Ceremony and will also receive a banner of their achievement to be hung in their school.
During the three months of recycling and saving the students at participating schools are also invited to take part in an essay contest. There will be two essay questions, one regarding saving money and the other recycling. Each school that participates in the Go Green & Save Green contest will have one winner. The student at each school whose essays have been selected will receive an ice cream party for their classroom(s). The essay contest is designed to reinforce the lessons being taught by the school-wide contest.
