Understanding Note Values

CLKER

Links:

Reading rhythms is essential for learning the basics in music as well as learning to read sheet music. Below are some common note values:

Sixteenth note= 1/4 beat
Eighth note= 1/2 beat
Quarter note= 1 beat
Half note= 2 beats
Dotted half note= 3 beats
Whole note=4 beats

Rhythmic Solfege:

Rhythmic solfege is an easy way to count rhythms rather than using numbers, which is shown in the second link. You will notice that rhythmic solfege is not shown for the sixteenth note. This is because counting rhythm in numbers will take place by the time the sixteenth note is learned. Here is what we will use for rhythmic solfege:

Eighth note= "ti" (pronounced "tee")
Quarter note= "ta"
Half note= "Half-note"
Dotted half note= "Dot-ted half"
Whole note= "Hold that whole note"

Provided at the left are links which will help you to better understand how to count and play rhythms. The top link is very informative and appropriate for people who are beginning to learn rhythm.
