Phases of the Moon

What causes the moon to change it's shape in our night sky?

The Moon orbits the Earth.

The Moon and Earth System orbit the Sun.

The parts of the Moon that we see on Earth are lit up by the Sun.

- Common Misconception: The Earth lights up the Moon.
This is wrong, both the Moon and the Earth get their light from the Sun.

There are 8 phases of our Moon:
- New Moon
- New Crescent (Waxing Crescent)
- First Quarter
- New Gibbous (Waxing Gibbous)
- Full Moon
- Old Gibbous (Waning Gibbous)
- Third Quarter
- Old Crescent (Waning Crescent)
