The official state flag of Alaska was adopted in 1959. The golden stars represent the constellation and the Big Dipper. The large star represents Alaska’s northern location. This beautiful flag was chosen from a flag designing contest. It was designed in 1926 by a 13 year old Native American boy named Bennie Benson. He was from a village of Chignik. Bennie won a $1,000.00 scholarship and a watch for winning the contest. 1. What does the star in the upper right of Alaska’s flag represent? 2. Who was the designer of the Alaska flag? 3. Why did he design the flag? 4. What did he win? |
