How Do We Classify and Represent Data?

Math Patterns Can Be Seen Everywhere!

Can the same data be organized in different ways?

We have been classifying, representing, and describing data in class.

Try these two games at home with your family:

Dear Parent:
Students are collecting data and learning
about how to sort and classify these data in class. One way to build on this
work is to play a guessing game about categories and rules.

1. Guess the Category Game:

One player lists things that belong to a category, and other players try to
guess the category. For example, if the secret category is “things that
are green,” the person may say “grass, inchworms, dollar bills . . .”

2. Guess My Rule Game:

You can also play Guess My Rule by gradually sorting a collection
of 15 to 20 items (such as objects from the kitchen) into two groups.
In one group, have objects that fit the rule, and in the other, have
objects that do not fit the rule. A rule might be “made of metal” or
“is red.” Start with just a few objects. As you continue to put objects
into each group, the child tries to guess your rule.

Please turn in a drawing or written sheet with the different rules and categories your family explored.

Also note some fun game links. Give them a try.

Have fun with data and math!
