LIVING THINGS.

The characteristics of living things.

Animals and plants are living things.

All living things have three vital functions:

• nutrition
• interaction
• reproduction

The structure of living things:

All living things are formed of cells.

Cells are the simplest form of living things.

Some kinds of organisms are single-cell organisms. All the three vital functions happen in their one cell.
In multicellular organisms, cells group together to form: tissues, organs and systems.

PLANTS.

The characteristics of plants.

• nutrition - Plants are multicellular organisms that produce their own food (autotroph)
• interaction - Plants do not move from place to place but they react to changes around them.
• reproduction - Most reproduce by flowers which produce seeds

The nutrition function in plants

Plants absorb water, mineral and carbon dioxide. Using the Sun's light they make carbohydrates through photosynthesis. Plants also breathe and excrete residues.

Now it is your turn!
Answer these questions:
• Name the vital functions of all living things.
• What does it mean that an organism is autotroph?
• Name the parts of a plant and write what their functions are
