Homework policy

One thing I've realized in years of teaching is that work habits and responsibility are considerably more important skills for students to learn at this age than even academic subject matter. This is especially true with high school being just around the corner for all of my students.

Therefore what follows are the steps that are involved in our homework policy for the middle school this year:

1) First assignment that is undone, unfinished or late, a note will go home that must be signed by a parent and RETURNED THE NEXT DAY.

2) The second undone, incomplete or late assignment will be handled the same way as the first.

3) Every subsequent undone, unfinished or late assignment will result in one point taken off of the student's final grade in that subject. This will always be accompanied by a note home.

4) The first time a note is not returned the next day, it will lead to loss of break privleges for a day for that student.

5) The second (and every subsequent) time a note is not returned on time, the same consequence will be given out.

6) Any extenuating circumstances MUST BE COMMUNICATED BY A PARENT IN WRITING OR VIA E-MAIL. These can include things like: sickness, family emergency, power outage, excessive amount of time it takes an individual child, etc. These do NOT include sports or other extracurricular or non-school related commitments.

I trust this approach will be easy to understand and create effective home to school communication. I know you, the parents, want to make sure that your child is getting the most out of the education being offered at WCA, and I will strive to make sure that continues to happen within my class.

MATH POLICY:
> When doing math homework, I expect the problems to be done out with the work SHOWN when appropriate. Each problem, including the 'work' is to all be done within the same box on a page so that students can look back to check their own work.
> There are some types of problems that do not allow for work to be shown. Those exceptions will be made clear to the students.
> To begin the year, calculators will NOT be used in math class except for problems that the text specifically states are to be solved with one.
> Students who do not show their work in boxes that also include the answers will need to redo the WHOLE LESSON as well as the new lesson assigned the next day.

VOCAB POLICY: This year, ALL vocabulary assignments must be hand written only.

In Him,
MR. H
