The Gilded age was a time of contradictions. The barons of industry created a class of incredible wealth, yet tenements and poverty showed a completely different side of American culture.

Cities swelled as waves of immigrants came to America searching for a better life. Unions gained support, and as the labor movement grew, working conditions improved. As the United States developed a social conscience, suffrage and temperance became important issues of the day. Modern inventions changed the way we worked and played.
