RELIGIOUS AFILIATION
Interdenominational (Wesleyan is strongest doctrine)
Current theology head is a national from SAM (South American Mission) Baptist.
WGM, SAM, Friends, etc sit on our board.
We are bottom line strongly evangelical and Bible based.
There is not a more evangelical university in South America.

PROGRAM GOALS
Undergraduate program Spanish program: month, summer, semester, and year long Spanish program
A Master's program in Spanish
Master's program in Latin American History
M.A. Double Master's in both
M.A. in Andean History (Historia Andina)
Residence for the language programs
Distance with two weeks or month residency for the others - in Cochabamba at a site that has a place to stay and a library in Spanish that would provide the books necessary.
Only offered to international students and accredited by university in the US. (Beth this has to be coordinated with Post Grado department).

FACILITIES
A beautiful campus of 1500 students in Santa Cruz
A fairly well-developed system and an eclectic variety of materials they are using.

SCHEDULE
Time - Modules for Spanish anytime
May to Aug is fine, as school is in session.
The school is currently running in a trimester system and May to Aug would be the second period.
This year the second period starts in June, so a June arrival is perfect.

CUSTOMS
There are no shot requirements for entering Bolivia,
Recommended shots are for hepatitis, yellow fever, and typhoid.
Most missionaries really don’t have any of these vaccinations.

ELECTRICITY
Voltage in Bolivia is 220/50 not a problem for laptops and most electric razors but a problem for a lot of other things. There is no 110 in the university.

WEATHER
Santa Cruz is on the edge of a tropical zone.
In June, temperatures can range from high 50s (at night) to mid 80s
Weather is cool and sometimes cold especially at night during a SURASO.
If it’s rainy, it feels colder.
However, it is not COLD, just cold because there is no heat.
There are some very cold days, not many.
Houses don’t have heat, so dress warm in them.

CLOTHING
Nicer casual clothes are appropriate.
Long sleeve shirts are useful.
Sweatshirts for everyday
A sweater and jacket for cooler days (homes are not heated)
Coat (if you plan to travel into the mountains of Sucre or La Paz)
For girls, pants, shorts and skirts are fine.
Nice casual for church, even coat and tie for men, dress for women.
Plan clothing in layers, easy to wash, dry, and pack.

TRANSPORTATION
Taxi: It costs between 10-15 Bolivianos, which means about $2.00 per ride.
Bus: it costs 1.50B per adult per ride, less than 20 cents.

WATER
Don’t drink the water from the tap.
Buy bottles of water.

MONEY
Take cash
1$ = about 8 bolivianos
Personally, the director has his bank accounts in the States.
It is now quite easy to use a debit card at an automatic teller to access cash in dollars or bolivianos.
Checks are difficult to cash.
Dollars are easy to change to bolivianos on the street.
Traveler’s Checks are a hassle – can be done but it’s really easier to use an automatic teller.
Credit cards, as such, can’t be used in many places.

ECONOMY
Everything is inexpensive when compared to the States.
Bolivia is the poorest country in South America.

COMPUTER
No problem bringing your laptop into country.
Customs supposedly allows one personal laptop to be carried in without charge.
There is an internet lab at the university
They can be found all over town where you can connect for pennies an hour.
The university has a LAN (Local Area Network) connection of 56Kbs at the University.
Video streaming can be done - the quality may be lacking.
It’s a decent connection.

MINISTRY
Preaching is always a possibility!
Testimony is a probability.
Music is always appreciated.
There are many opportunities for personal evangelism, especially with the English students at the university.

TEACHING NEEDS
The English department needs ESL teachers.
The Business department needs teachers of economics.
The Science department needs teachers of science.
The Music department needs teachers of music.

EQUIPMENT NEEDS
Any English teaching (ESL) materials (HS and college level)
The university is very short on books of any kind.

CHURCH
There is a campus church to plug into along with contacts with many other churches.

TEACHERS
Lic. Jasmine Tapia taught the Beginning Spanish class in 2005.
No one has yet been designated for the Intermediate Spanish class.
Dr. Blanca Elena Paz taught the Advanced Spanish class in 2005.

MATERIALS
We have books here that are in line with the minimum contents of your program and should be quite effective.
