INVENTORS

Inventions in industry, agriculture, and transportation transformed the country.

In the North, farm machinery allowed work to be done in a fraction of the time with a fraction of the workers previously employed. Many migrated to Nothern cities and mill towns where inventions like the sewing machine were revolutionizing factory work. Advances in railroads and communication allowed big business to prosper like never before.

In the South, the invention of Cotton Gin changed the face of agriculture. Cotton crops could be cleaned easily and efficiently. Plantations grew larger, and the Cotton Kingdom began its ever increasing spread westward.

Fueled by new inventions, the economic rift between the North and the South continued to grow. The stage was being set for inevitable war.
