Explorers Multimedia Project

5th Grade

INTRODUCTION
The United States was "found" by European explorers. Other explorers helped map and provided information about this new territory. Exploration was a hard, risky business. No one went exploring just to keep busy. Why did they explore? What were they looking for? Who paid for their expeditions?

TASK
You will create a PowerPoint presentation with a partner on an explorer.

PROCESS
Your team will research one explorer using the links on the right. (RIGHT-CLICK a link to open the website in a New Window so that these directions remain on your screen.) Your finished PowerPoint presentation will have a minimum of five slides. You can use more than five slides.

THE FIRST SLIDE will contain information about the explorer, and should include as much of the following information as possible:
• Name of explorer
• Where and when he was born
• Information about his family, childhood, schooling, early interests, and other training
• Where, when, and how he died
• Any other personal information about your explorer

THE SECOND SLIDE will have information about the country that supported the expedition. You should include:
• Name of country that supplied the ships and/ or other supplies
• Why did they support the expedition?
• Did this help or hurt the country (what did they get out of it)
• Any other facts about this country that will add information about the expedition

THE THIRD SLIDE will have information about the expedition and should also include a map of the route he took. You also need to include:
• What was the goal of the expedition?
• What did he find: people, land, and resources.
• Tell any problems he encountered.
• Any other information about the expedition that was not included.

THE FOURTH SLIDE will be a timeline of the life of your explorer and his journey. Use the drawing tools and text boxes to create this.

THE FIFTH SLIDE will contain a bibliography using at least 3 sources. Remember to record the URL for each web site you use.

PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS:
You will present your project to the entire class.
Each slide must contain at least:
• Background
• One graphic
• Word Art for the title
• Text within a text box
• Transition between slides
