Chorus Handbook continued

Grading Policy:

In order to achieve the highest grades possible, it is important for both students and parents to be aware of the chorus grading policy. As a performance based class, a significant percentage of points are awarded for participation in performances. Students must be responsible about informing their parents and attendance at concerts because of the big impact these events have on their grade. Please read to understand how points are earned in each category.

25% Concert Attendance

In order to receive full credit for concerts, each student must:
1. Attend all scheduled group performances!
2. Arrive at the performers’ assigned time before the scheduled performance time.
3. Wear the appropriate uniform/costume.
4. Follow the code of conduct.
5. Use proper concert etiquette when watching others perform.
*See “Required Performances” for specific guidelines regarding absences from performances.

35% Class Participation

Students begin each day with five points and are expected to fulfill the requirements to maintain those points in the class period.
2 points – Using appropriate singing posture
1 point – Keeping their eyes on the director
1 point – Singing with their mouth open and shaped correctly for the vowel sound
1 point – Following directions quickly and quietly

Occasionally the students will be asked to fill in a daily participation rubric as a self-evaluation. The director will review each student’s self-assessment and mark changes as necessary.

25% Class work

This category includes sight-singing, part-singing, music literacy, music appreciation, music analysis, composition, and more. Students are responsible for keeping their chorus binder up to date by checking with other students and with the director about missed work. Students are expected to bring their chorus materials to class with them daily.

15% Projects/Tests/Reviews

Tests will be given to assess student’s mastery of the concepts taught in class. These tests may be written or performance in nature.
Projects about performers or composers will be assigned twice during the school year, one during the first nine weeks and one during the third nine weeks.
Concert reviews will be written after reviewing their performance on video and may also be written if the chorus has the opportunity to attend a performance of another group.

Fundraising:

All students are encouraged to participate in the chorus fundraisers because all fundraiser money benefits chorus students. Students are not required to participate, but those who do may be rewarded depending on which fundraiser we participate in. The funds we raise are used to pay for such things as music, bus transportation, uniforms, accompanists, awards, and more.

Information regarding chorus fundraisers will be sent home as soon as it is available.
