Beowulf

Activities

1. Create a comic strip based on Beowulf, stressing the epic’s action and adventure. Focus on one of Beowulf’s three major battles: with Grendel, with Grendel’s mother, or with the fire-breathing dragon.

2. Paint or sketch an illustration of Heorot, the watery lair of Grendel and his mom, Beowulf’s tower, or another of the epic’s setting.

3. Write a eulogy that Wiglaf might have given at Beowulf’s funeral.

4. Tape a series of sound effects that you might use for a radio version for Beowulf’s battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon.

5. Create a newspaper outlining the major events in Beowulf. Write articles and include appropriate pictures (hand or computer-drawn, cut from magazines or newspapers, or found on the Internet). In addition to major articles, include typical newspaper features like editorials, obituaries, advertisements, and comics.

6. Create an artistic expression of a character, scene, or symbol in Beowulf. Artistic expressions may include painting, drawings, papier-mâché, and costume sketches.

7. Create a full-realized comic book based on the story of Beowulf (must be at least one page front and back).

8. Create a poem that demonstrates a theme from Beowulf.

9. Write a letter of thanks that King Hrothgar or his wife might have sent to Beowulf after he leaves Denmark.

10. Write obituaries for Grendel, Grendel’s mother, the fire-breathing dragon, and Beowulf. Include highlights of each character’s life and achievements.
