7 Roles of the President Assignment
Instructions: Each group will be responsible for presenting slides and discussion addressing how the current Obama administration addresses each of the 7 Roles of the Executive Branch. Remember, I am looking for specific examples as opposed to general responses. A good place to start research is www.whitehouse.gov. You can also search news outlets (New York Times, Washington Post, CNN), academic sites, etc. With the exception of #s 1 and 7, each arrow should be an individual/slide. Keep text on the slides to a minimum. Your sources should be cited in a bibliography slide. All completed slides should be placed in a public folder and backed up in private space. You will receive an individual grade for this exercise based on the CHS Presentation Rubric.
You will be assigned to groups of two or three students.

1. Chief of State
Discuss 3 recent examples of President Obama serving as Chief of State. With whom did he interact? What issues were addressed? (3 Slides)

2. Chief Executive
 Choose a key member of the President’s cabinet. How does this person help the president serve as CE? Make sure you have specific examples!
 How has President Obama expanded the Executive? What new positions have been created under President Obama?
 Who did Obama nominate to the Supreme Court? What factors influenced the Presidents decisions?
 What is the Executive Office of the President? (3 slides)

3. Chief Diplomat
 What is President Obama’s message in the Middle East and North Africa? Discuss specific countries.
 Where has President Obama travelled so far? Why is travelling such an important tool?
 Find another example of the President serving as Chief Diplomat. What action(s) did he take to fulfill this role? (3 slides)

4. Commander and Chief – The War in Afghanistan
 What options has the president been presented with? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the options presented?
 Who is advising the president?
 How much influence does Congress and/or the American people have when making these decisions? (3 slides)

5. Chief Legislator
 What have President Obama’s major legislative goals been since taking office? How have they changed since the mid-term elections?
 What actions has he taken to support key objectives? Be specific!
 Why is the President so important in the legislative process? Examples! (3 slides)

6. Chief of the Party
 What are some of the ways that President Obama can raise money for the Democratic Party? Be sure to use specific examples.
 Discuss a specific example of President Obama serving as Chief of Party.
 Discuss the recent situations where President Obama role as Chief of Party was not welcome? Why did this situation occur?(3 slides)

7. Chief Guardian of the Economy
 Who advises the President on economic matters? Be specific. Who are the individuals Obama relies most upon?
 What changes have been made to the President’s economic team in the last year?
 Highlight an economic program per group member. What is the specific purpose of the program? Who does the program benefit/target? (3 slides)
All slides MUST be saved in the public folder prior to the beginning of the class presentations. Failure to do so will cost you a letter grade.
