A Remembrance

A Remembrance…

It’s hard to believe 5 years have gone by since the tragedy of 9/11. I so clearly remember being in the WMMS library, glued to the small monitor in our back office, surrounded by teachers, administrators, and custodians. All of us were struggling to understand the horrors being reported.

A few weeks after the tragedy, Gayle Murray, a CTE teacher here at WMMS, gave me a remembrance bracelet bearing the name, Malverse Houscal, a victim of the collapse of one of the World Trade Center towers.

I tried to find out who Malverse was but no family member or friend provided any background information. I do not even know if he is a he or she. “Malverse” just seems like a male name to me. I suppose he was one of those nameless immigrants that wander our cities looking for the “streets of gold.” However, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time on September 11, 2001.

Susan Polis Schutz wrote the following poem after 9/11:

We must make the world
a place where
love dominates our hearts
nature sets the standard for beauty
simplicity and honesty are
the essence of our relationships
kindness guides our actions
and everyone respects one another.

Please read this poem with your children and share your thoughts and feelings. Also, do me a favor…say Malverse Houscal’s name out loud 3 times. Just maybe he can hear that he, too, is being remembered.
