Native American Cultures

The Work of the Anthropologist

Introduction:
You and your team are going to do the work of an anthropologist. What is an anthropologist? An anthropologist is a person who studies the behavior, and the physical, social, and cultural development of people. The people you and your team are going to study are the Iroquois, Powhatan, and Timucua. These people were some of the first people to live on the continent of North America (long before the land was known as North America).

Task:
You and your team are going to research and then create a product (Foldable, Flip Book, or Poster) to teach others about the Iroquois, Powhatan, and Timucua people.

Process:
Step 1: Read the section “Three Native American Communities” and answer the questions in your Anthropologist Field Notebook.
Step 2: Divide the three groups among your team members.
- Iroquois
- Powhatan
- Timucua
Step 3: Read about the Native American community you are assigned and answer the questions on the paper provided.
Step 4: As the anthropologist in charge of the selected community you need to find out the following information about your Native American group before the arrival of the Europeans. Use the information in the reading AND the links provided to complete the chart in your Anthropologist Field Notebook.
Step 5: Meet with your team to determine the layout of the project. Refer to the grading sheet to ensure you earn the highest grade possible for your work.
Step 6: Create your product.

Evaluation:
Refer to the Grading Sheet

Conclusion:
Thank you for your work as an anthropologist. Learning about other people helps us understand ourselves.
