Independence

The hometown of President Harry S. Truman, Independence is one of the state's most historic cities. It was the beginning of the Santa Fe Trail in 1821 and of the Oregon and California trails in the 1840s. Independence saw great prosperity from the late 1830s through the mid-1840s while the business of outfitting pioneers boomed. During the Civil War the town was occupied by both the Union and Confederate armies.
The Union Pacific Station, also known as the Truman Depot played an important role in Truman's career and his 1948 whistle stop presidential campaign. The Harry S. Truman Historic District, where Truman lived, includes a number of interesting Civil War era and Victorian houses.
6,974 was the population of Independence in 1900 growing to 113.288 by the 2000 Census.

Today the industries providing the most jobs in Independence are education, health care and social services.
