TYPES OF ROCKS

THE ROCK CYCLE

Links:

The solid layers of our planet are made of rocks. There are many different types of rocks, but they are defined as natural aggregates consisting of several kinds of mineral.

There are three different groups of rocks: sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous.

Each type of rocks is different because of the way it was formed.

Each rock type contains different minerals and has a different texture, due to its different process of formation.

Rocks can seem to be static things that never change. However, if we lived for ten thousand years we will observe the ways in which one rock is gradually produced from another. The rock cycle takes millions of years.

How are rocks formed? How do they change into another kind of rock?
