French Revolution Project The French Revolution was part of an ideological revolution in Western European culture. One of the most important elements of the revolution was the spread of information and ideas throughout the French population. Changing social structures and expanded literacy meant that the information revolution reached all levels of French society. As participants in this revolution, each of you will contribute to this information carriageway (We havent quite reached the information superhighway). Five groups will be represented as follows: 1. Liberal Reformers Challenging the status quo, the Bourbon monarchy, with their calls for constitutional reforms. (1789-1792) 2. Radical underground Power to the people! We want social change, not just some meaningless liberal mumbo-jumbo. (1789-92) 3. Conservatives/Monarchist (1789-92) 4. The Committee (1793-4) 5. British press (1789-94) Each group will publish a paper with articles addressing events within the stated time frame and representing the perspective or editorial bias of its slice of society. The Liberals will be publishing above-ground, but must keep in mind the censorship of the press. Attacks on the King must be cloaked in satire or other literary devices. The radical underground is just that. You are the true subversives, advocating a social rather than just a political revolution. The Monarchists represent the official line of the French government and are the mouthpiece of the Crown. The Committee represents the most radical phase of the revolution. You might have been labeled the underground radicals just a short year or two ago, but from 1793-4 you are the voice of the State. Finally, the Brits. How does this revolution look from Westminster, Buckingham Palace and the chippy on Wapping High St? Each group must: Select an editor and chief Publish a paper using Publisher w/ 2 400-500 word contributions from each correspondent. Individual articles need not include in-text citations, but the final page of your paper should include a brief listing of articles cited for each story. |
