The Thread

History is often compared to a tapestry, woven from thousands of distinct yet interconnected threads. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to select one of those single threads and follow it from early modern Europe to the present. Your “thread” is really a chain of events, and could start with something as simple as James Burke’s “One Word” (Filioque). It could be an individual or event that sets others in motion. It could begin with an idea. You decide!

Europe and Islam – Can the Two Coexist?

Trace the history of Europe and Islam from the Middle Ages to the present. Given this history and the recent “Global War on Terror,” can Europe and Islam coexist? The fact is that Europe Muslim population today is growing, but what changes will this growth bring? Research the issue and the effects it is having in Great Britain, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

The Real Front in the War on Terror

Why is Europe considered the real front in the war on terror by many? How is this war affecting the lives of Europeans? Politics? While Bush has often been depicted as a fascist in Europe, how do their anti-terrror and security laws compare to ours?

A New “Rise of the Right”
Does Europe face a real threat of a new “Rise of the Right.” Why have extreme right views gained traction in many parts of Europe? Is this really a threat or just growing pains as Europe expands and seeks to redefine its position in a global market?

Other Possibilities:
1. EU expansion East
2. Role of NATO
3. Welfare State
4. Increasing multilateral institutions v. national sovereignty
7. Globalism and Interdependence - The Role of the EU
