Visualize the Prairie

Worksheet 4: Unit Synthesizing Final Project

Visualize the Prairie

OBJECTIVE
For the past few weeks we have been studying Willa Cather’s My Antonia. In this unit we have identified various elements of literature, including symbolism, imagery, and theme. In order to demonstrate a mastery of these elements and the content of this unit, we will visit the Little Tarkio Prairie to take video and still photographs which represent lines from the novel. These images will then be included in a PowerPoint presentation given to your classmates. A scoring guide will follow these directions and is also made available as a link via the Rubistar link on the Unit Overview Worksheet.

DIRECTIONS
*You will choose ten passages or lines from the novel you feel suggest a mixture of symbolism, theme, or imagery.

*You will then take one photo or video shot to represent each line or passage. For example, Jim describes the vastness of the prairie when he first comes to live with his grandparents. The prairie could be seen as symbolic of greatness.

*Create one PowerPoint slide for each photo/video and line from the novel. (Refer to teacher-made model).

*Each project must have a minimum of eleven slides: ten for symbols/images/themes/ and a title slide.

*You may have no more than four slides of symbolism, theme, or imagery, but no fewer than two of any particular category.

*Each slide should include the video or photo, line/passage including quotation marks and page number. For example, “I all at once felt as if I were dissolved into something complete and great (44).”

*Please see scoring guide for further details.
