COMBATING AUTISM ACT OF 2006. This legislation was enacted in December 2006 by President George W. Bush. A few highlights include. • Provides support for autism research and other related activities until 2011. • Encourages more research and monitoring of "evidence-based" treatments. • Increase public awareness of ASD. • Promote early intervention and screening. As an added note, the National Institute of Health spent about $100 million for autism research and activities in 2007. EXPANDING THE PROMISE FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM ACT OF 2007. This legislation was recently introduced to the House by Senators Hilary Clinton and Wayne Allard. It has NOT yet been enacted. A few highlights of what this Act would provide, should it be approved, include: • Provide an additional $83 million during the first year it is approved. • Provide more grants for research. • Establish a task force that would monitor and keep track of latest findings about ASD. • Allocate funding to encourage States to develop "evidence-based" treatments and additional supports to people with ASD.
