real-picture icons, Velcro, and binder/folder

Preparation for Teacher:
Using digital images, the teacher will create real-picture icons that represent specific locations around and specific activities done in the classroom and school. For example, a real-picture icon for "recess" would be an icon with a photograph of a the playground. Other icons will be made based on the typical items or activities that are highly motivating to the student.

Step by Step Teacher Procedure:
The first step would be to teach the student to use picture exchange during one-to-one instruction. The teacher will implement this lesson first during "snack time" (and then later on in other one-to-one settings and then to group settings). The teacher will have available some icons that will be in use during these activities. For example, during snack time, there will be icons for "pop corn", and "juice". The teacher will prompt the student verbally "what do you want?" and point to the choice board with the icon snack items, and then prompt the student to hand the icon to the teacher in exchange for the actual snack item.

Assessment

Assessment Type(s): Demonstrations, Observations, Surveys
Assessment Plan:
The student will be given a portable icon binder or holder (containing various icons corresponding to specific activities). The teacher will keep tally of how often the student uses the icons to communicate on a given day for 5 consecutive school days.
