FAMILY CULTURE NEWSPAPER

“TO FORGET ONE’S ANCESTORS IS TO BE A BROOK WITHOUT A SOURCE, A TREE WITHOUT ROOTS.”--CHINESE PROVERB

Oral tradition is rich in culture and history, just like your family background. In order to fully appreciate your cultural diversity as well as others’, you will create a newspaper based on your family history. All articles must be written and arranged to resemble a newspaper. Create a name for your newspaper and include relevant pictures. As this is your final for the unit, be sure to incorporate many of the figurative language techniques discussed in class in order to ensure a quality project.

FAMILY TREE: Based off of the hands worksheet, create your own version of a family tree including your family’s last four generations. Be sure to include the family member name, nationality, and dates. NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN FOR SIMPLY ATTACHING THE HANDS WORKSHEET OR ANY OTHER FAMILY TREE CREATED BY ANOTHER PERSON.

INTERVIEW: Interview one of your parents or grandparents about an important event that happened either in their life, or another relative’s life that really impacted your family. Write an article about the event as if you were there.

HISTORICAL EVENT: Using the family tree or interview, research an event that occurred in any of your family’s cultural background. You must use three different styles of sources (for example internet, encyclopedia, book). PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED IN ANY WAY.

FAMILY FOOD: Provide the recipe for one of your family’s favorite food. Prepare this food and bring it to class on the day the assignment is due. Remember, the more recipe has been passed down from generation to generation, the more culturally diverse our buffet will be.

FOLK TALE: Create an unusual folk tale based off of an event discovered in the interview or historical event research.

BIBLIOGRAPHY: Provide a list of all references used in the MLA format discussed.

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES

5 POINTS: Extra effort is put in the newspaper or family tree in visual appeal and creativity.

10 POINTS: Create a comic strip based off a family event or write ten classified ads relevant to your family.

20 POINTS: Write an article about an unusual game that you learned as a child (game boards or games you invented do not work for this). Be sure to include and research where as well as how this game came about. You will share this game with the class.

30 POINTS: Create a media project that compares and contrasts your parents’ and grandparents’ lives to your own. The connections must be written in an article in your paper and the media portion will be presented to the class.
