Required Activities 1. An analysis of 2 published poems that we did not analyze in class. Analysis must be completed on 2 complex and grade level appropriate poems. Each analysis paragraph must be 8 sentences or more and follow the required format. (80 pts.) 2. Clean song lyrics of your choice with figurative language clearly identified. Song lyrics must contain a minimum of 4 different types of figurative language. They must be age appropriate and of average length. All figurative language must be clearly identified.(10 pts.) 3. 1 revised and extended free verse poem. Choose a previously written free verse poem. Extend the length to a minimum of 25 well developed lines. Add figurative language (minimum of 4 types), detailed imagery, voice, word choice, and appropriate line breaks/punctuation. Include the original to demonstrate revision. (20 pts.) 4.Memorized presentation of the extended free verse poem at the Poetry Cafe. Presentation must be fully memorized with presenter maintaining, fluency, meaningful movements, vocal variety, and eye contact. (30 pts.) 5. A minimum of 2 choice activities from any of the categories below (60 pts.) VISUAL 1. Create a series of comic strips that include all of the poetry terms. It must include well-drawn out characters (no stick figures), plenty of color, and an explanation of how all of the terms are used at the end. 2. Create a piece of art (a mask, poster collage, sculpture, painting, sketch, etc.). Your piece of art must include 3 new poems written by you of any of the ones we studied in class, and must include 4 figurative language terms with examples and definitions. It must be visually appealing/creative. KINESTHETIC 3. Write and perform a song. The song must demonstrate elements of free verse including at least 4 figurative language terms. The presentation must be well-rehearsed and mostly memorized. 4. Create a skit or pantomime to creatively teach the meanings of simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, alliteration, and imagery through the use of speech, movement, signs, props, etc. Include examples for each term. TECHNOLOGICAL 5. Using video, power point, or another form of technology, create a lesson on 5 different types of poetry. Clearly describe how each of the five poems are created (format, lines, etc), and include an example of each. Your lesson must incorporate creative imagery, movement, and visual appeal. VERBAL/WRITTEN 6. Create a poetry cube. Cover a tissue box, write 6 new poems using the types we studied in class (free verse, haiku, limerick, concrete, acrostic). Include at least 4 different types on the cube. Each side must contain one of these poems, typed. 7. Write a creative myth about how symbolism came to be. The myth must discuss the meaning and components of symbolism and must creatively personify symbol in the story. This assignment is a minimum of 2 full pages and must avoid grammatical errors. |
