Mrs. Waters' Class What's Up in First Grade?

Week of: April 25- April 29, 2011 Important Information: • Speller’s Choice activities are due Friday! • Please remember to send all money and checks in an envelope or baggie. Please be sure to write your child’s name, my name, how much you are sending, what the money is for, and your child’s lunch number on the envelope. Ice Cream money ($1) should be sent in a separate envelope. Please send in exact change for ice cream. • Missing: We are missing the following books: Digby & Kate . . ., Runaway Bunny, and Ladybugs. (The child who finds a missing book will get five treasures from the treasure box.) • When your child is going to be absent, please call Nurse Quinney at 459-5095. Please remember that make-up work will be given to your child upon his/her return. • The weekly What’s Up is emailed on Friday evening. Please use the What’s Up to help your child prepare for the upcoming week. Please practice these words/sentences with your child. Sometimes simply assigning your child the task of learning these words/sentences will not insure mastery. If your child is having problems, have him/her copy the words/sentences three times each night during the week to aid in the progress. • If your child needs to go home a different way than he or she regularly goes home, you must send in a note. We cannot accept phone calls and/or emails. If it is a bus change, be sure to include the bus number, the address where your child is going, and a telephone number where you can be reached. • We go to the library every Friday to check out books. During the week, students are allowed to check out a new book upon completion of class work. Please make sure your child brings his/her library book to school every day. • If you are dropping your child off in car line in the morning, please be sure to arrive before 8:20am. Paraprofessionals must be in their classes by 8:25am and are unable to continue to assist your child into the building after that time. Standards we are learning in class this week: Language: writing a persuasive paragraph (Review: using the principles of writing; prefixes and suffixes, commas in a series, compound sentences, antonyms [opposite] & synonyms [same]; beginning and ending of a paragraph; subject [naming part]; predicate [telling part]; verbs [action words]; nouns [naming words]) Math: math facts to 18 & solving word problems (Review: weight & capacity, measurement with standard & nonstandard units; identifying, counting & making trades with bills, coins; counting by 2’s, 5’s, & 10s; odd and even numbers) Reading: using strategies to understand and gain meaning from text Phonics: using phonics skills to help read and write words, sentences, and paragraphs |
