Dear Parents, I would like to welcome you and your child to First Grade. I hope together we can make this year a great success. Below, I have included some important information. If you have any other questions, please feel free to send a note. Paperwork and Car Rider Tags During Open House, you were given a folder. Inside the folder, there was paperwork that needs to be completed and returned by Monday. Also inside the folder, there was a blue car rider tag with Waters and your child’s number on it. You will need this tag if you want to go through the car rider line to pick up your child. This car rider tag is very important. Without it, you will have to go to the office to pick up your child. Each student was given two card rider tags (you just have to cut it in half). If you need an additional one, please just write me a note. What’s Up- You will be sent a printed copy of the first What’s Up for next week only. After that, you will need to access the weekly What’s Up online for the remainder of the year. You will need to go to www.bryan.k12.ga.us/rhps. Then click on the link entitled Teacher Web Pages. Then Click on my name. It will be updated by Friday evening for the following week. Upon a written request, parents can receive a printed copy. Homework- Our math and phonics programs will have a short homework sheet for the students to complete most nights. Beginning next week, the homework will be sent home nightly and will be due the following day. If your child receives a homework pass, he/she may use it in the place of one math and one phonics assignment. Some students will need more assistance to do the homework than others. Please assist your child by reading the directions and monitoring his work. Spelling- Beginning in a few weeks, your child will have a weekly spelling test. The list will be posted on line by Friday evening and your child will be tested on the following Friday. Please practice these words with your child. Sometimes simply assigning your child the task of learning these words will not insure these words are mastered. If your child begins having problems, have him/her copy each word three times several nights to aid in the progress. Behavior- I will contact you if I need to in regards to your child’s behavior. The classroom expectations are as follows: 1. I will keep my hands, feet, and objects to myself. 2. I will follow directions and complete all assignments. 3. I will show respect for myself and others. 4. My voice and movement around the room will be appropriate to the activity. Attendance- If your child is unable to attend school, please call the school nurse to let her know. If your child is absent, his/her work will be given to him upon his return to school. Please remember that school begins at 8:25. Your child will be marked tardy at 8:25. Schedule- Monday- Music Tuesday- Computer Wednesday- PE Thursday- PE Friday- Art ** The PE teachers have asked that the students wear soft-soled shoes and comfortable clothes on PE days. Lunch- We eat lunch from 12:10 – 12:40. After Labor Day, you may join us for lunch once a week. Please remember to make other arrangements for younger siblings. We will meet you in front of the lunchroom at 12:10. Music During Lunch- For those who are new, you will notice music playing for a few minutes during the lunch period. There is no talking during this time. The music serves as a signal for the children to eat to ensure that the children eat their meal. Sometimes the children are so excited when they go to lunch. They want talk to their friends about the fun things they are learning about in class, but then they forget to eat. Music is played just a few minutes so that little Mary isn’t upset at the end of the lunch when she hasn’t finished eating. Snack- Each child will bring in their own individual snacks on a daily basis. Please have your child bring a snack in his/her book bag, separate from their lunchbox. Lunch Money- The cost of school lunch is $2.00. I have found that it is easier to pay for the entire week on Monday. Lunch money is collected in the lunchroom during morning bus room. Please put the money in an envelope with your child’ name, my name, how much money you are sending, what the money is for, and your child’s lunch number (the last four digits of your child’s social security number). You may write a check for any amount up to $299. Ice Cream- Beginning August 20th, the school will sell ice cream on Fridays. The cost is $1.00. The students will need to bring the money for ice cream on the day they wish to purchase it. Please remember to put the money in an envelope and write what the money is for and your child’s name on the envelope. Ice cream money must be in a separate envelope from lunch money. Birthdays- If your child is celebrating a birthday, I always welcome a “birthday snack” in class. If you would like to send in a special treat on your child’s birthday, please drop it off at the front office first thing in the morning. Mrs. Tiedemann will make sure it gets to my room. Please do not send in a cake or anything that needs to be cut as our snack time is limited. We have 23 students. Please be reminded that students are not to pass out invitations to parties. Due to privacy laws, I am not permitted to give out phone numbers and addresses. I hope that this letter has answered some of your questions. Should you have any other questions or problems, please contact me. Sincerely, Mrs. Waters |
