The NIET Rubric

An Effective Classroom Environment

Apart from the InTASC standards, the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) has developed a rubric to evaluate teacher effectiveness in three areas: planning, instruction, and classroom management.

Overall, the rubric includes 19 indicators, each of which consists of numerous criteria. Of the 19 indicators, there are four that pertain directly to classroom management. These four indicators--Expectations, Respect, Environment, and Behavior Management--constitute the primary focus of this course.

Because you will most likely be evaluated with the NIET rubric (or a similar rubric), it is imperative that you familiarize yourself with its contents.

To help you with this, the rubric has been made available through the course management system. Download the rubric and read the four indicators that are most relevant to classroom management (see page titled Environment).
