Super Teacher hopes this packet will solve all your problems! * Licensed from the Clip Art Gallery on DiscoverySchool.com Mrs. Paluso's students have taken ribbons at the GSDSEF using these steps! |
Mrs. Paluso has gathered links and information on how to do a project. A written packet is given to parents at the back-to-school night and to her students. It is provided here as a web page to use if you prefer. Mrs. Paluso's students have gone to California State Science Fair and the GSDSEF following these steps! Good Luck! Summer is a great time to start Science Fair Project Research, Experiment and Data Collection! Remember Completed Project Notebook due in December, Project Display Board, and PowerPoint/Oral Presentation due January! Just choosing a topic during the summer can give more than a 3 week advantage! Note: The Timeline may be downloaded! See Science Fair for Middle school. Sometimes 6th grade is given extensions. Check Homework page to be certain! Paluso's packet starts here with a "Table of Contents" and offers links explaining how to do each step. There is also a link to Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair web page which offers great information. That's where Mrs. P got lots of hers! The Science Buddies site is invaluable; don't miss it! Also, credit needs to be given to a great science teacher, Ms. Gillum, who leads many of her students to ribbons at GSDSEF! Take our ideas and go get started! 1. Start EARLY! How? What to do first? · Check out the links! 2. For more help, read the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair Step-by-Step Guide (First link on this page). Be aware that some research ideas may be forbidden by GSDSEF if toxic, potentially harmful, a demonstration, or done too often. Certain things like bacteria and mold need special handling instructions followed. 3. Choose a topic by filling out "How to get an Idea" form. See second link on this page. * Get idea approved by Emailing Paluso! (ppaluso@chasd.org) And then... A Science Fair Project should follow the Scientific Method of doing research. SEE MORE about the Scientific Method at the link (the picture of the sun) on my HOME page. The Scientific Method usually includes these items in this order. See the links for more information on each. Mrs. Paluso will teach each step...one at a time...in class! Do not panic! Table of Contents of a Good Project: Yes, this is all in the links on this page but for those who like to read: Abstract (is displayed first but written last!) Introduction (written next to last!) Statement of the Problem (aka The Question) Review of Literature (Your Background Research) & Bibliography (Your sources of Information) Hypothesis (If you do this, then you expect that) Materials (everthing but paper & pencil) Procedures (Complete sentences. Number them.) Variables (all 4 kinds!) Data Results (your Observations in Table format) Analysis [The Graph(s)/the charts created by Word or Excel) and A Discussion of your Data and any trends.] Conclusion (Does it answer the Question? Does it support or not the Hypothesis? Does it agree or not with the Literature you read?) Recommendations (2! How to do better...and what the impact is on human kind) Appendices (Your Log Book and photos) The project is then presented in 3 ways to Mrs. Paluso. * The Final Report (in a notebook) * The Display Board * The PowerPoint Presentation See links to find out more on each item. |
