II. Verbs: Students should know how to conjugate and use the following high frequency verbs:

A. Ser = To be

yo soy (I am) nosotros somos (we are)
eres (you are) vosotros sóis (you all are)
usted, es (you are - formal) ustedes son (you all are - formal)
él/ella es (he/she/it is) ellos/ellas son (they are)


B. Estar = to be (location, feelings, health)

yo estoy nosotros estamos
estás vosotros estáis
usted, está ustedes están
él/ella está ellos/ellas están


C. Tener = to have

yo tengo nosotros tenemos
tienes vosotros tenéis
usted, tiene ustedes tienen
él/ella tiene ellos/ellas tienen


You should also be familiar with common expressions with tener:

tener hambre to be hungry
tener frío
to be cold
tener razón
to be right
tener miedo
to be afraid
tener sed
to be thirsty
tener sueño
to be sleepy

this verb is also used to mean have to when it is followed by
que + infinitive. Example:

Yo tengo que ir al dentista. I have to go to the dentist.

D. ir = to go

yo voy nosotros vamos
vas vosotros váis
usted, va ustedes van
él/ella va ellos/ellas van

This verb is used to express something that is going to happen. In this case it is followed by a + infinitive. Example:

  • José va a visitar a su tío en Costa Rica. José is going to visit his uncle in Cuba.

E. Other high frequency verb conjugations you should be familiar with:

querer = to want: quiero, quieres, quiere, queremos, queréis, quieren
poder = to be able or can: puedo puedes puede podemos podéis, pueden
hacer = to do: hago, haces, hace, hacemos, hacéis, hacen
decir = to say: digo, dices, dice, decimos, decís, dicen

F. Regular ar verb pattern: Take off the ar ending and add the endings o, as, a, amos, áis, an

hablar = to speak


yo hablo nosotros hablamos
tú hablas vosotros habláis
usted, habla ustedes hablan
él/ella habla ellos/ellas hablan

G. Regular er pattern: Take off the er ending and add the endings o, es, e, emos éis, en

comer = to eat


yo como nosotros comemos
tú comes vosotros coméis
usted, come ustedes comen
él/ella come ellos/ellas comen

H. Regular ir pattern: Take off the ir ending and add the endings o, es, e, imos ís, en

escribir = to write


yo escribo nosotros escribimos
tú escribes vosotros escribís
usted, escribe ustedes escriben
él/ella escribe ellos/ellas escriben

I. Ser vs Estar (see conjugations above)

You should know when to use the verb estar instead of ser for describing location,feelings, state of health or temporary condition. Examples:

Juan es flaco. John is skinny
Juan está flaco. John has gotten, or looks skinny.

Yo soy de Puerto Rico. I am from Puerto Rico
Yo estoy en Puerto Rico. I am in Pueto Rico.

Mi madre es simpática. My mother is nice.
Mi madre está contenta. My mother is happy.
