Monkey Pirate News Mrs. Upton's Class CLASSROOM NEWS Last week and this week I have been performing some testing in preparation for planning an individualized reading plan for each student. I hope to be finished by the end of next week so we can get more into the routine of first grade. We are, however, well into our first unit of Everyday Math. Unit One focuses on learning to use our math tool kits, geometric designs, recording and counting with tally marks, and more-than and less-than number stories. I apologize for having to leave early last week, but we have now learned how to play the penny-dice game. If you are interested in playing with your child at home, all you need is 20 pennies and a die. Hopefully they should be able to teach you how to play! HOMEWORK The only homework I require each night is 15 minutes of reading. Recent studies have shown that homework at this age does not improve student performance in the classroom. I believe children need to spend quality time with their families and enjoy extra curricular activities, such as baseball, basketball, soccer, etc., which allows them to build the large motor and small motor muscles they need to perform in the classroom. It is for these reasons that I do not expect children to do any additional homework. CHICK-FIL-A SPIRIT NIGHT This Thursday night will be our first Chick-fil-A Spirit Night of the school year. Dora the Explorer and Bob the Builder are expected to be there! Each student will receive a DOUBLE Cougar Dollar to spend at the Cougar Dollar Store when it opens next month! NO SCHOOL MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST! LABOR DAY HOLIDAY! CONTACT INFORMATION Teresa Upton School: 886-4540 Email: tupton@oconee.k12.sc.us |
