FAMILY CAREGIVING

Links:

Each November is proclaimed as the National Family Caregivers Month, as a time every year to thank, support, educate and celebrate more than 50 million family caregivers across the country currently providing an estimated $306 billion in "free" care giving services.

More and more family members are becoming caregivers, and America's family caregivers are family, friends, partners, and neighbors. Although experiences for some may range from simple weekly tasks to all-consuming responsibility, one cannot help but be changed after fulfilling the role of a family caregiver.

Because this role is both rewarding and stressful, there are many places to reach out for education and support, as shown on the left.

Some ways to take care of yourself as a Caregiver:

  • Pray and meditate
  • Be good to yourself
  • Rest and eat properly
  • Make time for leisure
  • Accept help and learn about resources
  • Express your emotions, and take one day at a time
