For the Student:

The Science Fair 2017 will be on Friday, May 5, 2017. This is approximately 14 weeks away, giving you ample time to research, select, and complete an experiment (if applicable), and then write a report. Don’t wait until the last minute to meet the timeline due dates; the time goes by very quickly. Remember, as the timeline for the Science Fair progresses, the temperature outdoors will rise. If you wait too long to complete your project or do your research, you will be working indoors while everyone else is enjoying the nice weather! Also, this year during the week of Science Fair will be Math MCAS testing. Please insure that your report is written and your project is done the week before the MCAS.

What is the Science Fair?
The fair is all about learning something about energy as it pertains to electricity. Your independent project should be something that that interests you! Use the Scientific Method and the Science Process Skills to obtain your results.

What Science Fair is not!
It is not about winning. Students who follow the Scientific Method and use the Process Skills for their projects are winners because they learned how to do a science project on their own and followed a set process. The methodology for experimentation/research is basically the same in fifth grade, high school, or in a real lab. Learning this process is one that can be applied again and again in school and possibly in a career.

What are some things that I need to do?

KNOW YOUR PROJECT - Choose a topic that is interesting but keep it simple. Focus on one thing and do it well. A project with too many variables or is very broad will be difficult and confusing. Pick one “driving question” and stick with it. Remember - KNOW YOUR PROJECT inside and out!

MEET ALL DUE DATES AND DEADLINES ON TIME - This teaches you responsibility and goal setting - an important life skill. Missing assigned dues dates will affect your grade and will cause you stress.

WRITE THE REPORT IN THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD FORMAT EXACTLY AS REQUESTED IN THE DIRECTIONS – The basic setup of the report doesn't change and will be similar throughout your school career. Learning how to do it correctly now will give you an important and empowering tool for academic success.

What about a partner, can I work with one?
Students can work with one partner from any class from the Brown School. However, remember that the project needs to reflect work that demonstrates that two students participated equally. The project should be a little more in depth because there are two students working.together. Each partner will need to speak with the judges. The project must be done on Google docs to allow me to research the revision history to insure equitable participation from both students.

Remember, working with a partner means not only completing a project but the added task of collaboration. This may be more work than working alone, Please think carefully before choosing to work with a partner. If you are not sure a partnership will work, then work alone.
