Mrs. Rice completed her 30th year of teaching with a great fourth grade class at Milwaukie Elementary School.

She retired from public education on June 15th, 2007.

Mrs. Rice began her school 'career' as a first grader at Wichita Grade School in 1960. At the beginning of fifth grade, she moved to Lot Whitcomb Elementary School. Seventh and eighth grade was spent at Dale J. Ickes Junior High School.

Mrs. Rice graduated from Clackamas High School in 1972. As a freshman, she joined Future Teachers of America. She served as the first full-year female student body president, and was Milwaukie's Junior Miss during her senior year.

After high school, Mrs. Rice (then Daphne Richardson) attended Clackamas Community College where she was a cheerleader, student body secretary, homecoming princess, and a member of the campus newspaper staff.

Mrs. Rice later transferred to Southern Oregon College to finish her degree in elementary education. She like Ashland so much, she stayed on at S.O.S.C. to complete her masters degree program focusing on outdoor education.

Hired at Milwaukie Elementary in 1977, she taught sixth grade for six years, sixteen years of fifth grade, six years of fifth and fourth grade combination classes, and two years of just fourth graders. She also taught intermediate students for North Clackamas summer schools held at Riverside Elementary, Milwaukie, and Lot Whitcomb.

Mrs. Rice met Mr. Rice teaching summer school at Lot Whitcomb in 1981. They celebrated their silver wedding anniversary (twenty-fifth) on New Years Eve, 2006! They enjoy running and walking before school, working out at the Jungle Gym after school, reading, eating, spending time in Burns, Oregon.
