In preparation for this trip, volunteers will be asked to attend a training session to become familiar with their procedures. Changes in the Earths Surface Scientific Inquiry Science, Technology and Human Activity Communication Arts Decoding strategies to problem-solve unknown words when reading Read grade level instructional text Develop vocabulary through text Apply pre-reading strategies to aid comprehension During reading utilize strategies to o Access prior knowledge o Preview, predict o Set a purpose for reading Apply post-reading skills to comprehend text Identify and explain connections between text ideas with personal lives, other texts and the world. Interpret and apply information in text and its features Explain examples of sensory details and figurative language within the context of poetry and prose Use details from text to o Make inferences about setting, characters, problems and solutions o Make predictions, draw conclusions o Identify cause and effect o Compare and contrast elements o Identify authors purpose Apply information in illustrations, title, chapter headings, table of contents, glossary, charts, diagrams, graphs, captions and amps to comprehend text. Explain examples of sensory details and figurative language within the context of nonfiction text. Follow a writing process to o Independently use a simple graphic organizer in prewriting o Generate a draft and routinely revise, edit and proofread o Independently publish writing Use parts of speech correctly in written text (verbs, conjunctions) Spelling Sentence Construction Narrative text Note-taking Expository and Persuasive Writing Root words, affixes, synonyms and antonyms, glossaries, dictionaries and other grammar skills. We will also read at least one novel per quarter. Math (Saxon series) Each morning students will complete short problems on the Math board. These problems will consist of simple problems, time, money and mental math facts. Following each daily lesson, students will complete a math worksheet of various problems pertaining to what was covered that day. Regular intervals of timed tests of math facts and assessments will be given in accordance to the lessons. They will have math homework every night that coincides with the daily lesson. If time permits, students will be allowed to work on homework during class.
