"Recognizing and respecting differences in others, and treating everyone like you want them to treat you, will help make our world a better place for everyone. Care... be your best. You don't have to be handicapped to be different. Everyone is different!"

-- Kimputer, Kim Peek, inspiration for Rain Main.

Autism is a developmental disability that generally appears in children between 15 and 20 months of age. In most cases, the child appears to progress normally initially, and then begins to regress: losing speech, social skills, and physical abilities.

Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities.

There is no known single cause for autism, but most experts agree that it is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function. Researchers have found differences in the shape and structure of the brain in autistic versus non-autistic children.

Although there is no known cause, we do know what does not cause autism. Autism is NOT caused by bad parenting. Autism is NOT a mental illness. An autistic child is not a rebellious kid who simply chooses not to behave. There are no known psychological factors in the development of the child that have been shown to cause autism.
