Association of Teachers of English in Kovel, Ukraine AWARDS AND ACTIVITIES

 


 

We conduct a school for creative advanced students. Teachers and students collaborate with the Rehabilitation Center. Students participate in the National Language Olympiads at Kyiv International University, Ostrozska Academy. At regional Olympiad in Lutsk our students took second and third prizes. We conducted a local festival, “Celebrate English.” Participate in the European Festival and win first prize. Participate in European Olympiad and win first and second prizes. Iryna Kotyuk participates in the con- ference “Let Us Build Europe Together” in Poland. Students and teachers attend lectures in the U.S. Education InformationCenter of American Councils in Kyiv. Two teachers and nine students attend pre-departure orientation for SSEP exchange program. We host delegations from Volyn Region: Novovolynsk, Lutsk, Stara Vyzhva. We establish a European club called “Diversity.” Teachers and students are members of the club, and Iryna Kotyuk is the coordinator. We collaborate with a professor of Volyn State University, Elina Kolyada, as research supervisor of Our Learned Society. We host a delegation Poland, share experience about activities of the Teachers' Resource Center and the club, “Diversity.” Discuss ways of networking. Ten students and two teachers leave for Kane, Pennsylvania, USA, to live with host families and attend classes at Kane Area High School for three weeks. 2005 Peace Corps Volunteer Lenore Johnsen arrives. Students participate in English Olympiads and win first prize in local competitions, and 2nd and 3rd in the regionals. Presentation of research papers by students in English and Ukrainian language at Lutsk State University, Gymnasium students take first, third and fourth prizes in regional competition. Olena Valchuk and Lenore Johnsen and nine students attend TESOL conference “Knowledge Transfer in the Global Academic Environment.” giving and attending seminars. Students present with posters their impressions of American education, family life, culture. Olena Valchuk, Iryna Kotyuk, Halyna Horkun, Tamara Dushenko, and Zhana Kompaniyets attend 10th annual TESOL conference “Communication in the Global Age” in Kiev, where she presents “International Partnership Develops Greater Cultural Awareness.” Other articles written and published by Olena Valchuk include: “Lesson Planning on the topic ‘Diversity,'” and “Teacher to Teacher,” on the subject of the Teachers' Resource Center. Articles published by other teachers at the Kovel Gymnasium are Iryna Kotyuk's “A Surefire Strategy to Improve Student Reading Comprehension;” Tamara Dushenko's “Different Communicative Methods in Teaching English and American Studies;” Halyna Horkun's “The Integrated Lesson of English and Computer Science- Job Hunting; The Use of Microsoft Word in Filling in the Business Paper;” and Zhanna Kompaniyets' “Developing Writing Competence.” Workshops in conversational English conducted for all age groups and welcoming anyone in the region to attend are conducted on a regular schedule. First place winner in national Peace Corps essay contest: “What Are Your Plans for Your Future, and How Would Gender Affect These Plans?” is a workshop attendee from School 10. Cultural and educational exchange with club “Diversity” takes ten students, two teachers, and Peace Corps Volunteer to Siemiatycze, Poland, where they travel to Warsaw for the European Unity festival, marching in the parade celebrating Poland's first anniversary as a member of the European Union and the youth of united Europe. Six months of participation in the European project “European Crafts,” sponsored by the foundation, Happy Childhood, and held in Motychdesny, near Lublin, Poland. It includes seven rounds. Three were conducted in Poland, and four in Ukraine. International partnership develops the person of the future. Ten students from Kane Pennsylvania, USA, visit Kovel and stay with host families for three weeks. Cultural exchange visit with Poland takes place during their stay, and they accompany Kovel students to Lublin, Poland for several days of arts and crafts festival. Student from Kovel C.G. wins first place in national competition for her research on European literature. The presidents of all the Teacher Resource Centers in Ukraine met in Buchach for a Workshop on Emotional Intelligence, and for discussion, led by Professor Lydia Tarnovsky, of common problems, activities, and perspectives for future develop- ment of the Teacher Resource Centers.
