Mechanical Weathering- Breaking down of rock by physical changes. Examples: frost, abrasion in moving water, action of plants and animals (pg. D 48). Chemical Weathering- Breaks down rocks by changing their composition. Oxidation and the action of acids are important in this process. Oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide can alter (change) the make up of the rocks and their formation (D 49). Oxygen when combined with iron in some rocks can cause rust to form. |
