BEFRIENDER MINISTRY

“When you or someone you know needs someone to listen…”

WHAT IS THIS MINISTRY?

Specially trained laypersons enter into caring relationships with others at times of special need by visiting with them and bringing emotional and spiritual support.

These volunteer ministers work with those in our community who are experiencing trying or transitional times, such as: feeling lonely or depressed; caregiving for a loved one; grieving the loss of a parent, spouse, child or another person; going through marital separation or divorce; coping with a disability; job loss, career transition or relocation; empty nest or retirement; welcoming a new child through birth or adoption.

Confidentiality is a vital component of BEFRIENDER MINISTRY. These ministers are not counselors or problem solvers, but are trained in listening skills, issues of grief, loss and aging, and in using spiritual resources.

HOW DO I BEGIN THIS PROCESS FOR MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE?

Once we are aware of your desire to learn more about having a BEFRIENDER visit you or someone you know, a BEFRIENDER Coordinator will speak with you to learn more about the situation and answer any questions.

Please note: If you wish to sign up someone else are doing it on behalf of someone else, please be sure to obtain that person’s permission first! Upon agreement, a BEFRIENDER will be assigned to meet with you, or the person desiring visits, and will contact you to set up a mutually convenient time.

Maroon and white BEFRIENDER brochures are located in the Care Note racks in the Gathering Space, and the lower level of the church. Complete the form contained in the brochure and drop it in the Collection Basket during any weekend mass.

For any other information about BEFRIENDER MINISTRY at St. Therese, please contact Ginny at 816-741-2800, ext. 218.
