 Start Chapter 2:

1. Tutor Training

A. Background information – study of the text “Tutoring: One to One Reading, Writing and Relating”

1. Highlight one thing from Chapter 1 - Maintain Confidentiality

2. Chapter 2 – The Theoretical Framework

a) Read together - page 7 section 1

b) Write a few notes – what is highlighted on the side is important

c) Silent read – homework The Act of Reading and Teaching Reading Skills in Context

Feb. 3, DAY THREE: d) Highlight what is important in The Act of Reading section

Vocabulary - Decoding – sounding out

e) Show more examples of the limitations of phonics

f) Although there are 26 letters, the English language combines them to make 44 different sounds.

Variant Vowels

Once students are adept at decoding words containing short and long vowels, the English vowel phonemes with variant pronunciations and spellings can be introduced. The following is a listing of variant vowel phonemes and spellings with a high frequency of occurrence:

Vocabulary: Phonics Phonemes

OO (two sounds, one spelling)

1. oo as in zoo and few

2. oo as in took

AL / AU / AW (one sound, three spellings)

1. o as in all

2. o as in saw

3. o as in taught

OU /OW (one sound, two spellings)

1. ou as in out

2. ow as in now

OI / OY (one sound, two spellings)

1. oi as in oil

2. oy as in boy

g) Show phonics resources- jolly phonics

Monday Feb. 5: DAY FOUR:

1) Finish Phonics Introduction: R- Controlled

R-Controlled (first three more common)

a as in car

ur as in fur (spelled ur, ir, er, and [w]or)

or as in for (same sound for or, ore, and oar)

ar as in air (spelled are and air)

ir as in ear (spelled ear and eer)

2) Show phonics resources- jolly phonics, talking letters

Jolly Phonics was done on Day 2

3) PAL program – mix of phonics, word families, site words, and books.

4) Dolch – word frequency lists – show to class, they will use these with their students. Resources are found in the Word Lists binder.

5) Discuss “rule breakers”- make a list of their own rule breakers “the”, “two” “school”

6) Make sure all vocabulary is understood and copied down.

7) Go over the rest of the Chapter and review for quiz. Go to Learning Strategies Database for tips on open book tests.
